Connect 4 Game

Connect 4 Game is a mobile board game app built to deliver a fun, polished, and competitive Four-in-a-Row experience on smartphones. The app allows players to enjoy the classic Connect 4 gameplay in both single-player and two-player modes through a clean and engaging interface. In single-player mode, users can challenge an AI opponent with multiple difficulty levels, making the game suitable for both casual players and those looking for a tougher strategy challenge. The app also includes score tracking, turn indicators, undo functionality, and match reset controls to make gameplay smooth and interactive. Built using Flutter and Dart with Riverpod for state management, the app offers a responsive cross-platform experience for Android and iOS from a single codebase. Overall, Connect 4 Game provides a lightweight and enjoyable digital version of the classic board game with modern UI and smart gameplay features.

Challenges & solutions

The technical problems our team solved to ship a reliable, unified mobile experience.

Running a recursive Minimax search (depth 5) on Dart's single-threaded UI loop blocks frame rendering, causing ~200ms freezes that ruin animation smoothness.

Engineered an isolated processing model utilizing Flutter's compute function to delegate the recursive Minimax algorithms (implemented in AIEngine) to a background Dart Isolate. Used dynamic move ordering (evaluating center columns first) and Alpha-Beta pruning to optimize search space traversal. To maintain thread-safe state synchronization, a deep copy of the board matrix is cloned (via BoardUtils) before being passed to the isolate, and state assertions are performed back on the main thread before committing the result to prevent race conditions from quick resets or undo requests.

Creating a smooth, gravity-based falling animation for individual slots without triggering full-board rebuilds that drop frames on low-end devices.

Developed a decoupled animation structure using a localized _DiscDropAnimator in BoardCellWidget. Leveraged a single-ticker AnimationController combined with a Curves.bounceOut interpolation path to translate the disc offset relative to cell size. By keying individual slot widgets with a unique ValueKey, Flutter avoids rebuilding the surrounding static board structure. Additionally, winning streaks are emphasized using a _PulsingRing running on a self-reversing ticker and AnimatedBuilder, completely isolating the dynamic border scale/fade logic from the main layout tree.
